Understanding China’s 144-Hour Visa-Free Transit Policy: Eligibility, Conditions, and Applicable Regions

China’s 144-hour visa-free transit policy allows eligible foreign nationals to stay in select cities and regions of China for up to 144 hours (6 days) without needing to apply for a visa. This policy is designed to facilitate short-term visits and promote tourism and business exchanges.

Eligibility and Conditions:

  1. Eligible Nationalities: This policy applies to citizens from 53 countries, including most European nations, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and others.
  2. Entry Points: Travelers must enter China through designated international airports, seaports, or land border crossings, such as Beijing Capital International Airport, Shanghai Pudong International Airport, and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.
  3. Transit Requirement: Travelers must hold valid travel documents and onward tickets to a third country (or region) and must depart within 144 hours. Proof of onward travel, such as an outbound flight ticket, is required upon entry.
  4. Applicable Regions: The visa-free policy is region-specific. For example, travelers entering through Shanghai can move within Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang provinces, while those entering through Beijing can travel within Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei province.

Applicable Cities and Regions:

China’s 144-hour visa-free policy currently applies to the following areas:

  • Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei
